My Body is my Territory

Abstract Summary/Description
In this performance, I explore the creative power of the body on a journey of discovery through the process of creativity. I am creative. This statement came about as a provocation in the Creativity Research course of the MACIEs Program. Throughout the semester, we were encouraged to adopt a weekly practice that would make us more creative. I chose to dance with fabrics. From this choice, I began to build this performance, which for me is a way of honoring the creative power of the body. Our body is made up of many sensations — pulse, rhythm, power — but, in the whirlwind of everyday life, many of them are forgotten. Often, we only remember it when it becomes ill. This performance speaks to the importance of feeling the body in multiple ways — because pain cannot be the only way. The beauty of a body expressing itself reveals the memories it contains. Through art, creativity is enhanced, promoting the experience of a present, alive and sensitive body.
